We have been advised that young children and vulnerable persons can be strangled by chain drives. This is very rare indeed, but there have been at least two tragic cases.

We recommend that you:

  • Adjust chains to keep them out of the reach of children.

  • Install a safety device that secures the chain loop suitable cleat out of harm’s way. A simple cleat (available from hardware stores) should be suitable. For new installations, where possible, fit operating chains with the tensioner we now supply with chain-operated blinds.

  • Keep cots and furniture away from window coverings.

For the future, consider other forms of hand-operation, or electric controls.

We also recommend our chain-operated blinds should not be installed in unsuitable places where young children and other vulnerable persons are found.
